Body Panel Fabrication: Part 3
For the GT380 body panels, we've covered how we make the forms in Part 1, and then how we made the molds in Part 2, now we'll cover creating the actual part. Once the molds are made were able to start using them to make parts. The Molds are made of fiberglass and comprised of multiple parts depending on how complicated the part. For the front fender, we use a 2 piece mold.
Fiberglass and resin are layered into the mold to painstakingly build up the core strength of the body panels. The amount of material used is usually dependant on the type of part being made. A body panel would tend to be a bit thicker than something like a fender for example.
Once they harden the parts are removed and trimmed before test fitting.
